JAZZ! plays Jazz Impressions of Close your eyes and listen. You will hear the music of New York City, Cuba, Brazil, Portugal, Africa, the Middle East and points beyond. These are the rhythms of Cabo Verde, where trans-Atlantic ships stopped to refuel, where Charles Darwin came to explore and where whalers arrived to recruit their crews. These are the melodies of Cabo Verde, whose people traveled the world and returned home with the music of the world sealed in their memories. On this new CD, the Cape Verdean music of Amandio Cabral becomes beautiful jazz -- arranged by the inimitable Larry Dunlap, performed by the Larry Dunlap Quintet (Larry Dunlap, Steve Campos, Ray Loeckle, Jeff Neighbor/Seward McCain, and Jim Zimmerman) and mixed by Amandio Cabral. "This music comes from the deepest part of Amandio Cabral's very romantic soul and holds the warmth of his beloved islands ... I hope you, the listeners, will feel just a small portion of the joy we felt in playing this music." "This is jazz for lovers ... Exotic rhythms caress the haunting melodic line of 'Tristalegria,' and 'Poema do Abraco' is simply beautiful."-Dallas Faulkner, Bay Arts and Music, December 2000
